Dental Services
Since November of 2013, the Bellevue Hospital’s Dental Unit, consisting of a full-time dental surgeon and a dental assistant, has been committed to providing the highest quality dental services to a challenging patient population whose oral health needs are usually neglected.
A comprehensive discussion of oral health care for persons in the institutional setting is somewhat challenging due to the variability of the population. A summary of the common dental manifestations seen in this population are poor oral hygiene, rampant dental decay, advanced generalized periodontal disease, multiple missing teeth, various oral facial pain and xerostomia.
Services provided to patients and staff range from basic dental health education to comprehensive dental examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions and root canal therapy.
Future aspirations for the department, in sticking with the mission of rehabilitation of the patients, would be a dental prosthodontic/prosthetic program as the incidence of edentulism is prevalent in this population.
