Senior Medical Social Worker (HPC/MSW 2)

Job Purpose:

Under the general direction of the Senior Medical Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for planning, directing, organizing and monitoring the activities of the Social Work Department of the Bellevue Hospital in accordance with the strategic objectives of the institution.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develops and maintains sound strategic and operational plan for the administration of Social Work activities for the hospital through continuous examination of individual jobs and working relationships with staff members and other persons within the hospital community.
• Determines, recommends and implements departmental policies and procedures which enhance the contribution of the Social Work Department to the total hospital programme.
• Establishes programmes and activities to enhance the patients’ wellbeing which include – Social investigations and counselling (for example group therapy, special talks, displays, panel discussions on specific topics relevant to mentally ill patients).
• Directs the work of the Social Work Department by conferring with and assigning responsibilities to professional staff and other personnel.
• Gives advice regarding the management of cases and other relevant topics.
• Assists in selecting trained personnel and the orientation of new staff to carry out the work of the Department.
• Represents the Department at meetings with management and establishes a system of reporting on the performance of the department to management.
• Recommends disciplinary action to be taken regarding breach of the institution’s code of conduct.
• Participates in continuous evaluation of patient care with other Heads of Department/Divisions,
• Medical Staff and collaborates in formulating plans for patient care improvement and patient rehabilitation.
• Supervises and evaluates the performance of personnel in the Social Work Department.

Required Qualification and Experience:

• Bachelor of Science in Social Work
• Certificate / Diploma in Supervisory Management
• At least five (5) years’ experience in the field of Social Work, (2) of which should be in a Supervisory position.
